About The Museum

Lucas County Historical Society: Located at 123 N. 17th St. in west Chariton, Iowa, the museum now is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visits may be arranged at other times depending upon availability of staff. To learn more about our buildings and collections, click on the photo links below. You may telephone us at (641) 774-4464 or e-mail us at lchs@iowatelecom.net. If you would like to become a LCHS member, annual dues are $5. Checks for that amount payable to the Lucas County Historical Society may be mailed to P.O. Box 807, Chariton, IA 50049.

A.J. Stephens House

The A.J. Stephens House, purchased in 1966, was the first building on the Lucas County Historical Society campus in west Chariton.

Otterbein Church

Home to a pioneer Benton Township United Brethren in Christ congregation, Otterbein Church was moved to the museum campus in 1976.

Pioneer Barn

The Pioneer Barn was built in 1995 using the timber frame of a pioneer barn moved to the museum campus. It contains various artifacts and an area suitable for public events.

Genealogy

While the Lucas County Historical Society does not maintain a genealogical collection, the Lucas County Genealogical Society maintains an amazingly comprehensive one. For more about it, click on the photograph.

Puckerbrush Shool

Puckerbrush School was originally located on Pleasant Ridge in Ottercreek Township. In use until 1963, it was moved to the museum campus in 1967.

Pioneer Log Cabin

Originally built by Liberty Township pioneers, the cabin was disassembled and moved to the museum campus in 1995 and reassembled in 2001

Lewis Building

Built in phases between 1976 and 1992 and named for native son and labor giant John L. Lewis, the Lewis Building houses four galleries, a library, commons area and office.

Blacksmith Shop

The Blacksmith Shop, newest building on the LCHS campus, is slated for completion in September. The exterior should be complete in May; a recent grant from the South Central Community Foundation will finish the floor.
